You’ll find it a little challenging to find a class that teaches hand-to-hand combat as well as swordsmanship. This is generally because the sword is a way of life to many, and they devote themselves to learning it.

That said, some kenjutsu clubs teach unarmed combat as well. In them, the hands become swords in the sense that throws, strikes and joint locks all come from cutting movements, towards your opponent’s centre or in a way that destabilises or hurts them. It’s always the most practical of arts, but when you spend that much time studying the use of a weapon, it really does become an extension of yourself. You meld with it perfectly and everything flows around you, making perfect sense. You reach a state of harmony where you yourself become the sword and the sword itself becomes you. Armed or unarmed, you are the same.

Having said that, there are some Japanese martial arts that do include sword training but are predominantly hand-to-hand fighting. Aikido, Karate and Ninjutsu are the ones that come to my mind. They all teach a variety of weapons including staves (long and short), tonfa, nunchakus, kama etc. I’ve never heard of anywhere that teaches the use of the war fan, but that sounds like a ninjutsu style to me.

Tang Soo Do teaches long stick fighting and sword. But you have to advance a little to do sword. It also teaches great hand and foot techniques. It is a korean martial art developed during the ancient korean wars.
