What is the difference between aikido/kendo/kenjutsu/iaido/iaijutsu/battojutsu?
They are all related with swords (bamboo or katana).
Even in aikido which focuses on grappling has sword fighting in it.
So, what are the differences, advantages/disadvantages and comparisons between aikido, kendo, kenjutsu, iaido, iaijutsu and battojutsu?
aikido you start out empty handed as you become more advance yiou learn to use a jo and a bokken. it is more of a passive art. this is one style
kenjutsu is far older then kendo. and kenjutsu use a bokken not the bamboo one. there there are still a few hundred kenjutsu style left i believe. but this method is not as popular as kendo is kendo is more safer. kenjutsu when you slip or have an accident there is a good chance of you breaking a bone on the your partner. kenjutsu was original taught with out using armor.
kendo use the bamboo sword and it is the new of the concepts and is safer then the kenjutsu. more orientate to the sport. there are hundreds of styles of this art. besides the bamboo sword yo are also in a light armor to prevent injuries.
iaido, iaijutsu and batto jutsu all use the katana. there are hundreds of styles of these 3.
iaido is katana only and is the art of drawing the sword. mostly all kata
iaijustu well the way i learned it used both the katana and bokken. i’m not sure if this is true for all. it intales both kata and application
batto jutsu use the katana and is both kata and cutting, the primary focus is on cuting
aikijutsi is the original form
aikido became the more controlled ‘practice style’
Kendo is the practice of bamboo sword work
Knejutsu is the actual application (is using the sword on someone)
basically -do means the practice of something to attain internal spiritual improvement
-jutsu/jitsy means the reallife application
iaido / iaijutsu is the same thing for real sword (practice Vs real use)
like the dudes on top said, there right and iaido is the art of drawing the sword
