I need help with understanding Kyudo!?

I was looking through the Kyudo lessons in Yahoo. Is 11 a good age to start for it? I mean is it to complicated for younger kids? I’m still looking for a good nice Teacher here in the Philippines and I want to know more about it. In Manila, Taguig.

At 11 years of age you will not only struggle with being able to handle the bow but you may not be able to pull it properly or at all. Good luck though.

    Hi,

It will depend on whom you find as a teacher. Here in Japan, many students begin studying kyudo in junior high school– about age 12– and they study with classmates under an upper-grade teacher. At my dojo, we have had a few beginners that young, too.

Some teachers think that starting too young can influence your posture in a bad way, but if you work with a low-power bow, I don’t think you will have any trouble with that.

Keep in mind that kyudo requires a lot of concentration and concentrated effort. Most practitioners become interested and begin training only in adulthood.

    Good luck with your search.

I have taught several children on the US, ages 11, 12 and 15. The 11 and 12 year olds typically did not have enough hand-eye coordination. The stage they were at in their growth cycles made it difficult for them because theye were awkward in general. But the biggest problem wad that they did not have the attention span for the very slow-paced, meditative nature of kyudo.
