I have a samurai sword which my late father brought back from ”the Islands” after WWII. He told me it belonged to a Japanese lieutenant colonel who was killed in action. It is in a shark-skin scabbard with fine gilt work. The history of the family is on the hilt in Chinese characters (Japan didn’t adopt its own characters until the early 30s). Amongst other things, I recall it mentions the ”sixth grandson”. The owner’s name is attached on a wooden disk. It translates as ”Sweet Fragrance”. I hate the bloody thing. God only knows how many heads it’s chopped off. I once phoned the Japanese Embassy in Canberra, Australia, and told them that I’d be happy to give it back to the family, if they could be identified. I was fobbed off on the pretext that there were stringent rules about sending weapons between countries, or some such bullshit. They were just too bloody lazy to get off their arses. So, it languishes in a bag in the farthest corner of my store room.
