every martial arts have its own capability no mtter how it is…learn more martial arts can open your mind wider and wider..

the problem with young people, is always about being critical towards one direction when they see and analize the technique .

This was the 3 kumitachi, created by Morihiro Saito which him in turn learned from Osensei. What Saito-sensei did was to put it all together, name it, so to make it more structured and easier to practice.

There are a lot of videos with Saito-sensei demonstrating all five kumitachis on you tube, I suggest you have a look at them instead for more detail.

Yet another example that in Aikido, people do NOT know how to use a sword… Now don’t get me wrong: we know how to disarm a sword attacker (sometimes) but when it comes to using weapons Aikidoka are not good (unless they have trained in an weapon art in parrallel)… And I can already see the reply about Saito Sensei being the greatest swordman in the word etc… all you have to do is see how the Uke are made with the bokken: blocking with the blade??? Never…

  9. Haartian says:

Truth be told, technique rocks if you perform it 3xtimes faster than your opponent.

@jazzyslip Yes u r right. I am an Iwama Aikidoka and as most Aikidokas know (at least the ppl within Iwama ryu that I met) these sword practices are not practiced to become a master swordsman. Aikido is not a sword school, BUT the sword is a perfect tool to use when practicing TIMING, which Aikido is all about. I hope you appreciate this answer.

  13. jazzyslip says:

@supertotoro in my opinion you are completely right ;) but I think you will agree with me that our opinion is not one of the majority of Aikidoka… Aikido technics are indeed derived from the use of Katana and Yari, and therefore using the bokken or the jo will help in the timing and the ma ai (as you said) and as such they are very valuable exercises… but too many AIkidoka are convinced that they know how to use a sword

  14. supertotoro says:

@jazzyslip maybe u r right, but from the aikidokas I have met i have not had that impression. But at least u and me agree :)

  15. DeStijlBenighted says:

@supertotoro There is so much to this san-no-kumitachi that unfortunately this video does not capture. Even the clips of Morihiro Sensei san do not show what is involved. The initial irimi of uke tachi takes a lot of practice, not just a matter of slapping the sword and say “come get me”. Also when done well it is very difficult for uchi tachi to get his hip around the tsuki for the gyaku yokomen. The subtleties in this are endless.
